Dr. Richard Wallace, chemistry, has contributed a chapter to the book “Banana Breeding: Progress and Challenges” published by CRC press in 2011.  The chapter, with co-author Markku Häkkinen of Finland,  is titled“Genetic Resources for Banana Development”.  The book brings together authors from around the world to present the latest developments in biotechnology related to banana cultivation and production.  The importance of the book and the chapters within is related to the need for food production to increase to meet the expected world population in 2050 of approximately 10 billion people.  Easy growing, high calorie, nutritious foods, such as bananas are the top priority as a solution to this imminent problem.   This text is the first comprehensive examination of all aspects of banana breeding and genetics in a number of years.
