Donna Mullenax, physics, presents "Rocks, Minerals, and Sediment" to 80 6th graders at Georgetown K8 School.  The invitation was a result of a former GRAM participant sharing her experience with her peer teachers.  The teachers then invited Professor Mullenax to come and present a geology lesson to three classes. The focus of the lesson was to teach the different types of rocks and the rock cycle by having the students interact with samples.  Most of the samples were collected druring the 2013 NSF Funded Teacher Quality GRAM workshop, with the exception of shale, which came from West Viriginia.  The students learned about granite, slate, marble, shale, sandstone, gneiss, and kaolin.  They learned how shale can become slate and granite gneiss as part of the rock cycle.  The students also discussed where samples were collected, about sediment and how it becomes sedimentary rock as well as Providence Canyon and the human impact on the earth.
