Laura Peaty, MPH May 2009

Entomology Technician
Chatham County Mosquito Control
I am repsonsible for disease surveillance and tracking of nuisance and disease-transmitting mosquitoes across the County; specifically covering the Islands. I will be practicing techniques of mosquito collection through strategic dipping in areas mapped out using GIS technology. I make important decisions as to if and when specific areas need to be treated with biological and chemical forms of mosquito control and where to set up particular traps such as CDC Light traps and Gravid traps. These traps allow collection of immature and adult female mosquitoes; thus reducing numbers throughout the County. Upon collection of mosquitoes, identification and testing for mosquito-borne diseases will proceed through laboratory practices for both larval and adult mosquitoes of many species.

My Masters in Public Health, with a focus in Infectious Diseases, has greatly expanded my knowledge of mosquitoes, mosquito-borne diseases and the various methods of mosquito collection. There are several species in Chatham County that contribute to the spreading of West Nile (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), both causing huge public health threats. A refined concentration of mosquito biology and anatomy has enabled me to increase my knowledge in identification of adult mosquitoes; an important focus when dealing with mosquitoes that can potentially transmit specific diseases to our Chatham County residents.

I currently work at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph's/Candler. I manage the cancer registry and our NCI Community Cancer Center pilot program. My experience in the MPH program has allowed me to be truly competitive in the public health arena.
