Disability Access - Fall Commencement
Graduation begins promptly on the day of commencement. Plan to arrive very early (at least an hour before the ceremony begins), so that you have time to park and to be comfortably seated before the crowd arrives. Once the ceremony starts, graduates and faculty are marching into the arena and latecomers have long delays and limited assistance in gaining entrance and being seated.
When you enter the arena, there will be large signs posted at the entrance to direct people to disability seating. Staff will also be available to assist you with seating.
You will be seated at the back of the arena floor. Chairs can easily be moved around to accommodate any equipment you have. The ceremony usually lasts no longer than two hours. Accessible bathrooms are in the hallway near the entrance doors.
Because the disability seating space on the arena floor is very limited, we respectfully request that only one person accompany each disabled person in this section. This assures that there is space for everyone who must have it. We must leave ample aisle space for the graduates and faculty to process in and out. We suggest you pre-arrange a place to meet with your graduate after graduation is over. The lobby is extremely crowded after the ceremony. Many guests just plan to stay seated and have their graduate return to them. You can follow the signs back to the alternate exit.
If you have any questions prior to graduation, please call Mrs. Kelly Woodruff, Director of Disability Services, at 912.344.2744. We welcome you and hope you enjoy this wonderful day in your graduate’s life!
