Common Read

The Common Read, a nation-wide practice that has been well-established for decades, not only strives to provide a common learning experience for all first-year students, to engage those students in academic and social development, and to impress successful academic skills upon them from the very first day they arrive on campus, but we also approach our Common Read as a campus-wide endeavor, including students in all stages of degree-completion and courses from all four of Armstrong’s colleges.

Armstrong’s Common Read text for the 2012 - 2013 academic year was The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan. Pollan masterfully delves into the age-old question "what's for dinner?" by following home-grown, alternative/organic-grown, and industrial-grown foods from source to table. Pollan's narrative  illuminates the impact each of these food options has on individuals, families, communities, and the world around us.

The Common Read text for 2013-2014 will be announced in April.
