Notice of Construction Work:  The Learning Commons and MCC (Exterior)

Jul 21, 2014, 02:16 pm - Becky Smith

The contractors will begin work this week on the final phase of the site work for the Learning Commons project.

This work will include:
- The replacement of damaged sidewalks leading from the Sports Center parking lot to the quad area in front of the Learning Commons.
- The replacement of portions of the existing sidewalk that extends from Science Drive to the quad (the walk along the South side of Solms and Hawes)
- New hardscape at the Shearhouse Plaza area on the north side of the Learning Commons / MCC (concrete & brick pavers and concrete walks); new benches and tables with umbrellas, bicycle racks, lighting
- The installation of pavers at the east front porch entry of the Learning Commons (quad side).

Also included will be work to the existing brick walls at the MCC outside of the Food Court.

During the course of the construction existing pedestrian sidewalk routes to several buildings will be affected:
- Learning Commons east and north entries (for duration of plaza project work, the building will not be accessible via the plaza)
- Solms and Hawes Hall south entries
- MCC and the Food Court north and east entries (for duration of plaza project work, the building will not be accessible via the plaza)
- The International Garden south entrance

The contractor will focus initial efforts on the sidewalk replacement portion of the work in order to complete it in advance of the start of fall semester classes beginning August 18th. Over the next several weeks as sections of sidewalk slabs are removed and replaced, pedestrian traffic will be diverted from the work zone.

As the north plaza area will not be accessible during construction, the primary impact experienced will be the temporary closure of the direct access routes between Solms/Hawes and the Learning Commons/MCC. All buildings will remain open and operational.  Emergency routes will be maintained.

Construction materials and equipment will be stored on the north side of the MCC Mechanical Room and deliveries will typically be received via Science Drive. In the interest of safety, all students, faculty, staff and visitors should remain outside of the construction work area.

For information or any concerns related to the project, please contact:

As always, in the event of an after-hours emergency or a security concern, please call the University Police Department at 344-3333. Please let them know the nature of the emergency and they will notify the on-call Facilities Services personnel for a facility related issue.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this construction period.

Armstrong Gateway Signage

Jun 30, 2014, 04:06 pm - Becky Smith

Campus Gateway Signage Project

On June 25, 2014, work began on the construction of new "Gateway Signage" for Armstrong.  The project consists of the demolition of the existing sign along Abercorn Street (completed 6/25/14), and the installation of three new brick and cast stone entry signs, along with landscaping, lighting, and irrigation around all three signs.

The new signage will reflect Armstrong's new name (center sign) and its branding (bookend signs on Arts Drive and Science Drive), and will enhance the aesthetics of our main campus entry.  A temporary banner showing the image of our new center Gateway sign with our new University name will be erected on Tuesday morning, July 1st.

Construction is anticipated to last through August.  The signage itself will be completed by August 13th, with the remaining time between August 13th and August 30th will be devoted to finishing touches on landscaping and irrigation.

The campus will officially dedicate the new sign as we celebrate the beginning of our academic year.

Architect:  Woolpert
Construction:  Johnson-Laux
Estimated Completion:  August 30, 2013
Funding Source:  End of Year Funds

Please take a look at the renderings of the new signage.
