Armstrong Students Earn Radiation Therapy Scholarship
(June 24, 2011) Jennifer Gleitsmann and Jessica Jacobson, Armstrong Atlantic State University students in the Radiologic Sciences Department, each received a 2011-2012 Varian Radiation Therapy Student Scholarship of $5,000, awarded by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
“It is not unheard of for two students from the same program to get this scholarship, but it is unusual,” said Elwin Tilson, Armstrong head of radiologic sciences. “We attract good students to a good program, as we have had three winners of this scholarship in the last two years.”
For Gleitsmann, a non-traditional student who lives 60 miles from Armstrong’s campus, the award will help to defray the costs of tuition and transportation in her last year at Armstrong. “It will ease the financial burden of having to work full time in order to pay for school,” Gleitsmann said, “and will help me when I graduate because my student loans will be smaller.”
After her May 2012 graduation, Gleitsmann plans to immediately enter the field of radiation therapy.
Jacobson will also use the money to cut the costs of tuition. “With this scholarship, I hope to be able to pay my tuition and not have to take out any extra loan money,” she said. Jacobson chose to study the radiation therapy discipline after her grandfather passed away from lung cancer. She wants to make a difference in her patient’s lives as soon as she graduates. “I decided that radiation therapy was what I wanted to do, so I could be there to smile and maybe make a difference in somebody's day.”
To be considered for the scholarship, students had to write a 300-400 word essay, submit a recommendation, show financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
“I am so very proud of these students, who I see as already showing the characteristics of future leaders in our profession,” Tilson said.
